How to list products that do not have a Product ID (UPC, EAN, JAN or ISBN)

This page contains four sections that explain about Product IDs and GTIN exemptions, what you need to know before you request a GTIN exemption, detailed steps on how to request a GTIN exemption, and information to help you add your product for which you do not have Product ID .

What is a Product ID?

Product ID is one of the mandatory fields to be entered while creating new product listings on Amazon.in. It is nothing but the bar-code of your product and is also known as Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) – UPC, EAN, JAN or ISBN.

Getting GTIN exemptions – While GTIN/UPC is a mandatory attribute for creating new listings on Amazon, you can create listings without GTIN under certain conditions. This process is called GTIN exemption. You need to obtain exemption for a particular brand in a specific product category. It is also required if you are not a brand owner and still want to sell your products.

Before you request a GTIN exemption

Listed below are some of the important steps to keep in mind before applying for exemption:

1. When do I apply for GTIN exemption?

You can apply for GTIN exemption, if you come across any of the following scenarios:

  • You want to sell products for which you are a manufacturer or brand or publisher and do not provide a GTIN. For example, private label products or hand-made products
  • You want to sell products which are non-branded and do not have GTINs. For example, Wholesale products.
  • You want to sell parts which do not have a GTIN. For example, automotive parts.
  • You want to sell bundles which do not have a GTIN. For example, customised bundles like a pack containing a leather belt and wallet or a pack of two shirts.
Note: 1. Learn more about the overview of category requirements and UPC exemptions, to understand about categories that do not require product IDs for listing.
Note: 2. If the categories you are planning to list in are restricted, you will also need category-level approval in addition to GTIN Exemption to start listing products. If you do not have this approval already, go to Overview of Categories for more information on category-level approvals and apply accordingly.

2. Brands that require a GTIN to list

We have a list of brands that require a GTIN to list on Amazon. GTIN Exemption is not applicable to these brands since the brand already provides a GS1 approved barcode on their products. Any ASIN that belongs to any of these brands and does not have a GTIN will be suppressed.

How to request a GTIN exemption

The following section tells you how to prepare your documents when you are about to request a GTIN exemption.

What information should you keep handy to apply for GTIN exemption?

You can apply for GTIN exemption here. Make sure that you have the information mentioned below for all GTIN exemption requests. Get them ready before submitting the request:

  • Sample product title and images of all the sides of your product and the packaging of the product for that brand or publisher. Please ensure below guidelines are met:
    • Brand name entered during application process should be an exact match to brand name available on the product and/or packaging.
    • Images should be real-world pictures of the products and packaging, meaning the product and packaging need to be held in hand, or placed on a table while clicking the picture.
    • Branding is permanently affixed on the packaging and/or product.
    • Products should not have GS1 approved barcode available on the product and/or packaging of the product. If a GS1 approved barcode is available, you can make use of same to list products instead of applying for GTIN Exemption.
Note:
  • If you are selling any non-branded products or bundles, please enter "Generic" in the brand name field.
  • It is not necessary for your brand to be registered to enter the brand name in the form.
  • GTIN exemption is only given to list products without a product ID . You may be required to obtain additional Brand approval to list your products.

Request Approval

Note: If you have received GTIN exemption after 10 July, 2019, you do not need to apply for GTIN exemption again for the same brand. The GTIN Exemption validity is unlimited once approved. You will be able to add your products on Amazon without applying for exemption again for that brand
Note: In certain cases, Category level approvals may be required in addition to GTIN exemption approvals to start listing products on Seller Central. In case you are unable to list products using approved GTIN Exemption, we recommend you to check if you are already approved to list in that particular category. If you do not have this approval already, go to Overview of Categories for more information on category level approvals and apply accordingly.

*GTIN exemption is only given to list products without a product ID. You may be required to obtain additional Brand approval to list your products.

After all the mandatory attributes are filled in, the Save and Finish button at the bottom will change from grey to teal.
