Inventory storage limits

To manage fulfilment centre storage space in a better way, we establish an inventory storage limit for all sellers using Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA).

An inventory storage limit is the amount of inventory units that can be stored/inbounded within an Amazon fulfilment centre (FC) by FBA sellers. Your FBA inventory level is required to be at or below your inventory storage limit.

The inventory storage limit is subject to change on the first day of every month. The calculation considers factors, such as your sales and the space availability at the applicable Amazon FC.

Any inventory storage limit exceptions for specific FCs granted to sellers by filling the inventory storage form (Please refer to Exceeding your limit section) will be valid up till the next revision of the inventory storage limit, i.e. the first day of the next month.

Tip: If you are not subject to a storage limit, then the storage monitor will not be displayed.

Your Amazon fulfilment centre level storage limits

An item is classified as ‘oversize’ if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • The item package weighs more than 12 kg
  • The item exceeds 50.8 cm (20 in) on its longest side, 40.64 cm (16 in) on its median side and 25.4 cm (10 in) on its shortest side. If the item dimensions exceed the specified limits on any side, then the product will be classified as oversize.

Items that do not cross the oversize thresholds mentioned above will be considered as ‘standard-size’ products.

Storage Monitor report

Tracking your storage limits

Your storage limit is the total amount of inventory that you can store in Amazon Fulfilment Centres (FCs). Storage limits are automatically evaluated every month based on various factors related to space availability at the Fulfilment Centres (FCs) and your sales history, and are then accordingly adjusted.

The inventory storage monitor will show your 'current inventory' level and your inventory storage limit assigned for the FC. This can be viewed at Inventory Space Allocation. In determining your current inventory level, the monitor considers the following:

Current inventory in the Amazon fulfilment centre

+ Shipments that have been created but have not yet arrived at the FC

- Any processed removal orders from the FC

= Current inventory level

The green, yellow and red indicators also alert you to how close you are to your limit:

Green Your inventory level is at less than 75% of your limit
Yellow Your inventory level is between 75% and 90% of your limit
Red Your inventory level is at more than 90% of your limit

The inventory storage monitor will be displayed separately for standard-size and Oversize inventory units. Inventory levels are tracked separately for these types of inventory and sellers may be given an inventory storage limit for either or both of these types of inventory. The inventory storage monitor will only be displayed for the type of inventory for which you have been given an inventory storage limit. If you have been given an inventory storage limit for just one type of inventory, then the inventory storage monitor will appear for just that type.

You can view storage limits assigned to you in various eligible FCs by clicking on the View Storage Report link. This link is present on the storage monitors displayed at the bottom of the page when creating an inbound shipment. Check capacity limits carefully before planning your shipment, as the system does not allow you to create shipments of more than the available capacity limits assigned to you for the specific FC.

Exceeding your FBA storage limit

When your current inventory level reaches your inventory storage limit, you cannot create a new inbound shipment to an Amazon fulfilment centre until you:

  • Sell some of your current inventory
  • Request to have some of your inventory returned to you by creating a removal order

Requesting a storage limit increase

To request for an increase of your storage limit, please fill the Inventory Storage Form.

Note: Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, and are influenced by factors such as inventory turnover rates and the type of inventory that you currently maintain.

ASIN Inventory Storage Limit

In a pursuit to enable sellers to manage their inventory storage more effectively, all FBA sellers are subjected to ASIN inventory storage limits. As an FBA seller, if you hold over-stocked inventory in a space-constrained fulfilment centre, then you will be subjected to these limits.

Over-stocked inventory is the inventory which lasts beyond the 12 weeks of the average sales run rate. For example, if an ASIN sells 100 units every week, then 12 weeks of the average sales run rate is 1200. If the ASIN inventory is more than 1200 units, then it is referred to as an over-stocked ASIN. If this ASIN is present in a space-constrained Fulfilment Centre (FC), then it is subjected to a storage limit.

The storage limit is calculated on the basis of the past sales run rate. It is updated every week on the basis of the space utilisation in the FC and the most recent sales run rate. Only the ASINs that are 90 days or older in the FC are considered for this calculation.

Exceeding the ASIN Inventory Storage Limit

If the inventory of the ASIN is more than the inventory storage limit, then you will not be able to inbound that particular ASIN to any Fulfilment Centre (FC). In order to inbound the ASIN, you will have to:

  1. Sell some of your current inventory faster
  2. Request to have some of your inventory returned to you by creating a removal order
To request for an exception to inbound this ASIN, please fill the ASIN Inventory Storage Form.
Note: Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, and are influenced by factors such as space availability and inventory storage limits in the fulfilment centre to which inbound is created.
