UPC to use for parent product ID

Hey all, new seller on amazon. We currently sell via shopify and was mostly set up by our marketing firm we had hired. Attempting to expand onto Amazon ourselves.

We sell clothes (with variation on size and color). When listing our product, the initial product detail asks for an external product ID. For this, we have UPCs for each variation. But which ID should we use for the "parent ID"? We don't exactly have an umbrella UPC for each of our products that we use (we do have an internal ID we use but it's not one of that complies with the EAN, UPC, GTIN, or ASIN character requirements).

Should we just click "no product ID"?

Follow up question if we go the no product ID route... when doing the variations, it auto-populates individual seller SKUs that we did not create... but then amazon has an error that says it isn't recognized in their database...?

Hello @Seller_7bPzVWauT3yaF,

Thanks for posting your inquiry. A Parent listing is just a shell ASIN and is not an actual product for sale. It is meant to act as the display for your Child listings, which are the actual listings. You should not use any UPC for any Parent.

Regards,

- Manny
