New seller return help.

I am a new seller, fulfilling my own orders. I shipped a very heavy appliance (over 100 pounds) via freight to a customer. The customer wants to return the item claiming it was bigger than expected. The product dimensions were clearly listed on the Amazon listing. The item also contains combustible gases. I messaged the buyer I was not taking returns on this item. Do I have to refund this order given I am a third party seller?

You need to familiarize yourself with Amazon policy regarding your product.

As a general rule you will need to accept returns and provide refunds for all of your products for any reason.

Do not expect customers to read the listing.

You stated the item has combustable gasses. This could be an issue. Im sure your DOT or IASA certified to ship that item, correct? If Amazon has determined the item is DG (dangerous goods) then there is a possibility the customer cannot return the item.

If amazon determines that the customer can't safely return the item they will just refund them in full and you will have neither the money or the item.

I would suggest taking a hard look at your listings and realize that not everything is a good fit for amazon. Sounds like items like this would be better sold locally to you through FB marketplace or something.

Can you offer insight on how to recoup a restocking fee?
View post

Ethically the only way to justify applying a restocking fee is if the item is returned to you and the there is an issue with the item, if it were missing parts, damaged, the wrong item etc...

This is a 100 pound item and a custom wood skid has to be built to ship it. So we have material and labor cost associated with just shipping the item. So how do I recoup a restocking fee?

You dont. Its the sellers responsibility to mange costs associated with returns.

Amazon restocking fee is for items returned missing parts, damaged, wrong item, etc...
