Hidden Insurance Overcharges by Amazon partnered carrier (DHL)on Buy Shipping – Sellers, Beware!

Fellow Amazon Sellers,

I'm writing this to warn you about a serious ongoing issue involving DHL shipments purchased through Amazon Buy Shipping. This is not a one-off error—it's happening systematically across hundreds of orders, and it’s costing us our hard-earned profits.

The Issue:

When you purchase a shipping label via Buy Shipping, the insurance cost shown is low—usually around $2 to $4. But after the shipment is processed, Amazon quietly deducts an additional $6 to $7 under “Adjustment” with the description "Insurance Charge."

These charges are applied even when there are NO discrepancies in package size, weight, or service type.

For example:

Insurance shown during label purchase: $3.15

Insurance actually deducted later: $10.50

No difference in size/weight (verified).

If this happened on just a few orders, I could overlook it. But this is affecting EVERY SINGLE ORDER—we're talking about hundreds of shipments. That’s $600–$700 in hidden charges for every 100 orders—enough to wipe out all profit margins for small and medium-sized sellers.

Amazon Support’s Response?

They keep talking about dimensional weight, fuel surcharges, or APV audits—all of which are completely unrelated to insurance, which is calculated based on item value, not weight or fuel prices. So far, they’ve failed to address the real issue.

This Feels Like Theft.

Amazon’s partnered carrier, DHL, is quietly inflating charges after checkout—charges we never agreed to. And Amazon is letting it happen through their own Buy Shipping system.

What You Can Do:

Go to Reports > Transaction View > Filter for “Adjustment”

Look at your recent orders and compare insurance charges

If you see this pattern, raise the issue with Amazon support

Share your experience in this thread so Amazon cannot ignore it

If we don’t speak up, this practice will continue to silently drain our businesses. We need Amazon to investigate and stop this unfair and unethical behavior by its partnered carrier.

Let’s make our voices heard.

I see the same issues with my USPS, UPS and DHL packages. About 80% of the packages will have random adjustments after the package has shipped out. Sometimes, dimensional adjustment and sometimes, remote area delivery fees etc. You can never figure out when the extra charges will apply. I just allocate an extra 10% when determining my list price to cover these type of "surprises".

Yes, it is happening on almost every HDL order. DHL knows nothing about was told to contact Amazon and all they do is send a canned email about UPS. They do not read the problem.
