I am trying to close our account and have put in a removal request. How long does it take to remove the inventory. It has been almost a week.

You'll need to wait. A week is nothing.
In my experience, 1-3 weeks is pretty typical, but 1-2 months is not unusual. Longest I've had took 7 months; hopefully you won't run into that long of a wait; but if a lot of books, I suspect it will be September or later before everything is done.

Amazon returns in batches and that can take weeks and months.

Additionally per the removal orders help page: "Note: It can take 90 days or more for a removal order to process and the shipment to leave the fulfillment center. Once the carrier has picked up your removed inventory, they’ll contact your designated recipient to arrange delivery. If they can’t arrange delivery, Amazon will contact you to help resolve the issue."
