GTIN exemption photos help

So, after wrestling with Seller Support for over a week, I've finally resigned myself to the notion that my blanket non-ISBN exemption (which I had for at least 15 years) has disappeared -- without notice, of course -- and that I now need to apply for a GTIN exemption for each and every book I add that is not already in the Amazon catalogue. (When I ask why my previous non-ISBN exemption is no longer valid, "Seller Support" tells me that they "cannot discuss the details of my business.")

They ask for images and clearly they do not want scans, but it seems they want "real-world photos."

Can someone walk me through this? What, precisely do they want?

(I might add that this change would seem to benefit neither Amazon, nor the Amazon customer. More sellers will simplify their lives by entering their items under any old existing listing, and fewer older or scarcer books will be in the catalogue, causing buyers to look elsewhere.)

Thanks, in advance.
