Refuses to return item

The buyer purchased the item, and then initiated a return advising that they "no longer needed the item", however, has yet to return it. This was on 12/07. Here we are on Jan 7th and all communications efforts have failed, Amazon auto-authorized the money back to her.
At this point, she has the item and money and it does appear that she intends on returning it.
Because it was auto-initiated, (which i didn't approve of), I am unable to open a Safe T claim.
I emailed Amazon and they responded with a Dear John letter saying there was nothing they could do. HOW SWAY?
Is there any recourse about this? Any actions I can take to prevent this from happening in the future?
