Delivery to FBA warehouse, warehousing distribution process

We would like to know how Amazon FBA unpacks the goods upon their arrival at the Amazon warehouse, how the goods are scanned and counted after being unpacked, and how the goods are distributed to various sub-warehouses after the counting process. Assuming the goods are clothing items packaged in polythene plastic bags, what type of container is used during the distribution process?

Hi @Seller_sTB7wR2ajMDtT,

Let me share what I found in Amazon's help documentation about the FBA receiving and storage process.

When your clothing items arrive at Amazon, here's what happens according to the "How Amazon stores your inventory" section (help page):

"During the Receiving process, your item barcodes are individually scanned and entered into the tracking system, the dimensions (to the nearest 1/10') and weight (to the nearest 1/10 lb) are captured for storage and fulfillment purposes."

For storage, Amazon mentions they "store inventory either in bulk or in individual 'pickup' locations." For clothing specifically, there are some preparation requirements outlined in the "Packaging guidelines" section (help page):

  • Items need to be in sealed poly bags or shrink wrap (at least 1.5 mil thick)
  • Bags with 5+ inch openings must have suffocation warnings
  • Items should be folded to their smallest dimensions
  • Scannable labels must remain visible after bagging

Regarding distribution to different warehouses, Amazon uses what they call "Box-Level Inventory Placement." According to the help page (link here), this system helps "improve the distribution of your products across Amazon's fulfillment network" by storing products closer to customers. Your inventory might be split into different groups, each going to different locations, but this happens automatically and at no extra cost to you.

I hope this helps explain the process! Let me know if you have any other questions.
