FBA inventory placement vs distributed inventory placement

I'm a bit confused on the difference.

I just started sending inventory to FBA for one SKU...I'm currently under the default "distributed Inventory Placement" option. So

First time I sent one box to one state, everything good.

Second time I sent out 1 box to one and then they split the inventory to 10 different states

Third time I sent out 4 boxes, each one to a different state and once they were checked in they still split each box to different states.

How is this any different than just the "inventory placement" option? If this option they send all shipments to one fulfillment center then split it up accordingly why would I pay extra for that since they are already doing this under the "Distributed Inventory Placement"?

I want them to be sent where they seem fit to be able to offer prime one-two day shipping but why would I pay extra for "Inventory Placement" any other benefits that I'm missing?

Thanks

Greetings @Seller_zMXHBtqA32RWO,

Thanks for posting, I would be happy to break down the difference between Inventory Place vs distributed inventory placement.

By default, when you create a shipping plan, your shipment may be divided into multiple shipments, each directed to a different receive center or fulfillment center (referred to as distributed inventory placement). The fulfillment centers are selected based on the products you're shipping and where you are shipping from. By having your inventory spread across multiple fulfillment centers across the country, customers who buy your product may receive it faster than they would if your inventory was located farther away.

You can sign up for the Inventory Placement Service and send all of your eligible inventory to a single receive center or fulfillment center (see the Inventory placement exceptions section below). When the shipment arrives, it is split up and sent to different fulfillment centers for you. A per-item service fee applies.

In short, with Inventory Placement, you should only need to send your inventory to one receive center or FC. To answer your main question about the difference, it comes down to who splits up the shipment (you vs Amazon). Let me know if you have additional questions!
