Carrier cost

Has anyone ever had a shipping cost more than twice the cost of the product you're shipping to the customer? This is an item weighing one pound addressed to a U.S. customer and other shipping options were more. Someone help me figure this out please?

Is it perhaps getting a Remote Area Surcharge from UPS and FedEx? It's around $14, except for going to Alaska where it's around $40. You can sometimes get around this fee by either using the USPS, UPS Ground Saver or FedEx Ground Economy (which the USPS delivers), or by using FedEx One Rate which doesn't charge Remote Area Surcharge fees.
