What happens if a customer requests a refund but doesn't return the item?

A few things here, I have a few refund requests and I've messaged the buyers to return the item but didn't get an answer. I'm not sure if Amazon is refunding them and they get to keep the item.

What is the best way to proceed? I read something about its better to provide the prepaid label that way I get to choose when to refund and not amazon? please help as it feels there are a lot of scammers out there.

Thanks.

It is very common for customers to request a refund, then never get around to returning the item.

If a customer makes a return request, Amazon will generally auto-authorize it. If they do not, it is important that you authorize it, or if you prefer, issue a refund without return. Once you have authorized a return, do nothing until you receive it; there is a good chance the customer will never get around to returning, and you get to keep your money (Amazon will deduct it from your account when the return is opened, but return it after a couple of months if the item is never returned). The last thing you want to do is to remind a customer to do something that will cost you money.

And yes, there are a lot of scammers out there. That's why it's best (generally) to require a return.

I ALWAYS make them return items because I would rather lose money on a return than just give away my stuff.

Only half (or less) of the 'returns' actually come back in my case so they will sit dormant until Amazon removes them eventually.

With the RFS (Refund at First Scan) stuff Amazon will refund when the package gets to the PO on the way back BUT you then can examine it and file a Safe-T claim if needed. I just got refunded for the return postage on a couple 'buyer faulted' returns.

Those were actually "wrong item sent" and I took pictures of the return, packing slip, item, and order to show they got what they ordered!
