That is Amazon saying,

"Ok, we will refund the buyer, but we still want some cash because the product did sell in the first place".

For us, this has been on every refund as far back as I can remember. At least since 2019 and most of the time it is close to $5.00 for items over $100 or some threshold in that range.

Refund administration fee

If you refund a customer for an order for which you have already received payment, Amazon will refund you the amount of the referral fee you paid for the item(s), minus the applicable refund administration fee, which is the lesser of $5.00 or 20% of the applicable referral fee.

For example, if you refund a customer the $10.00 total sales price of an item in a category with a 15% referral fee, your refund administration fee will be $0.30 ($10.00 x 15% referral fee = $1.50).

They have been doing it for years. Lesser of $5 or 20% of referral fees

You may not have noticed if your items were "New Selections", which have "free returns" for a short period of time.

It is Amazon's way of generating a profit, no matter what hand they are dealt.

This is why Amazon is a business who makes money on transactions this is why they push so much return fraud as they are making money on transactions so wasteful and one you almost pinpoint Amazon will be total destruction of this planet! This is why we canceled all family and business PRIME memberships and reduced business spending along with personal spending to maybe 5% of what we use to spend purchasing items in 2023. Money is all they care about so stop spending!

Out of all the crazy fees on Amazon, this is one I do not have a problem with. I mean, Amazon helped you sell the item. The return isn't their fault. You used their platform, their financial services for the transaction and for the refund, and their return service to the customer.

There are so many other ridiculous fees that Amazon charges, but this isn't one of them.

Amazon has always done this.

Also they charge you a "shipping tax" when you buy their labels - which effectively erases any discount they claim you are getting (but of course the Post Office, UPS, etc. gives Amazon very deep discounts).

And when they send you your 1099 they "fail" to deduct the fees you were charged and claim that you received 100% of the total sales (thereby reducing Amazon's tax exposure). And that should be a tax reporting crime against Amazon because the total money NEVER touched your hands (or bank account).
