Strategic category placement on Amazon: to follow suit or report mislistings?

My top-selling competitor, who commands more than 30% of my market according to Helium 10, is listed in an incorrect category. Although his product is also listed in the appropriate category, he concurrently keeps it in a second, smaller, and less competitive category. In this second category, his product boasts 22k+ reviews, while other products on the first page range from 30 to 1k reviews. By employing this strategy, he manages to achieve a top rank and secure 88+ Amazon Choice badges. Several other competitors have followed suit and now hold high positions in this unrelated category.

I seek your advice: Should I also consider entering this category? Would it be better to identify another low-competition category and aim for the top spot there? Alternatively, is there an effective method on Amazon to report these competitors and ensure they are categorized correctly?

Hello @Seller_IjC5i7JPXjNJS,

Michelle at Amazon here. I understand that you are wondering if you should move your item to another incorrect category to try get some sales from that category. What is likely happening with your competitor is customers are finding their items with keywords etc that are making it show up in other categories organically. I would keep your items in the correct category as it's a policy violation to put it in the incorrect category.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Michelle
