Shipping Rates for books

I've been selling books through Marketplace for a number of years now. During that time, the Post Office and UPS have raised shipping rates a number of times. I just mailed a children's book with a weight of 1.10 and the cheapest shipping available was the bound printed matter for 4.00+. I had little choice but to select it. The customer, however, paid $3.99 for shipping meaning I had to eat the rest. After the take away for Amazon's royalty, I will end up perhaps making enough for a sip of coffee at Dunkin Donuts. Amazon has not raised the price charged for shipping since I've been working with them which is about 6 years. I am wondering if they have any plans to do so. I will have to raise the price on my books if I am to continue to sell on the marketplace. And when I do, I will probably get this ridiculous third party email saying I have books overpriced. I'm beginning to believe that the only one who makes anything off of selling books on Marketplace is Amazon.

I've been selling books on Amazon since 2003 and the rate has been raised once (it was $3.49)

However, at that time, and for many years after, Media sellers could not set their own rates.

Now they can. So, in the eyes of Amazon, the problem of rising shipping costs (both postage and materials) has been solved. Sellers may raise their shipping charge. Of course this only applies to those on the professional plan. But, as I say, Amazon views that particular problem as solved.

Sellers on the individual plan just have to pad the price of the book.
