You might be interested in reading through this page on recent changes for listing apparel items, along with this overview of the Amazon Custom program since it sounds like you are creating these shirts yourself!
For external product IDs, you can take a look through this page on different types of Product IDs, and this page which confirms how Amazon defines valid UPCs.
